Almost three centuries ago, Thomas Robert Malthus a British social scientist published his theory titled "Essay on Principles of Population" wherein he predicted that sometime in the future population
growth will surpass the production of subsistence particularly
food.He predicted food riots and widespread
poverty in overly populated countries.Today, China and India has over two billion people between them. But there are no food riots and poverty is not widespread specially in China. With over a billion people, China made good use of cheap labor to mass produce goods that are being exported worldwide resulting to a consistent growth
rate averaging about 10% yearly.These
brings in wealth and wealth negates poverty and hunger. The same is true in India, although not as spectacularly as in China.Foreign businessmen has to book months in advance for a hotel room in Calcutta to be sure of accommodation. And the the published growth rate reflects only the visible or legal trade, income in pirated video, audio and computer software discs not to mention the proceeds from the drug trade brings in revenue which could be as big or bigger than legally exported
products. Hunger? Well, China has been exporting and even smuggling surplus food pproducts at prices lower than local products.<
