George Washington was born on February 22 1732 in Westmoreland county Virginia to the family of Augustine Washington and
Mary Ball Washington.He was the eldest son of his parents,the prevailing circumstance during his days restricted him to just a little formal education.After the death of his half brother Lawrence,he inherited a plantation known as ''''Mount Vernon''''.
In 1759,he married Martha Custis,a young widow with a large estate,this made him one of the wealthiest men in Virginia.The
marriage did not produce any seedlings,they raised Martha''s children from her previous marriage.In 1758,George Washington was elected into the house of Burgesses,he served conscientously but without special distinction for 17yrs.George Washington gained political and administrative experience as justice of peace for Fairfax
county.
When the fighting broke out between Massasachusetts and the British in 1775,Congress named him the commander of its newly created continental army,hoping his appointment would promote unity between New England and Virginia.He took command of the makeshift force besieging the British in Boston in mid-July .George Washington was defeated in August by General William Howe.In November,he retreated across the Hudson River into New Jersey and a month later crossed the Delaware to safety in Pennsylvania.
George Washington contributed immensely to the Franco-American victory and was elected the president of The United States of America in 1788 and again in 1792.He presided over the formation and initial operation of the new government.After leaving office in 1797,he retired to ''''Mount Vernon'''' where he died on December 14 1799.
