“Write about your favourite character in Great Expectations (except Pip). Show why you think that character is memorable
and important.” Miss Habisham’s stepchild Estella is my favourite character on Great Expectations. She is Pip’s unreachable
love throughout the
novel. Pip loves her passionatelyand tries to change himself to be more worthy for Estella. However, Estella emphasizes that she has no heart. Estella is an ironic character. When she is three years old, she is adopted by Miss Havisham. She raised Estella to break men’s hearts and take her revenge. When pip starts to visit Satis House, he falls in love with Estella at first sight and she wins Pip’s deepest love. Although Estella contemps Pip because he is from lower class, she is actually even more lower than Pip because of her real family. Estella is victimized two times throughout the novel. Rather than being raised by her real father Magwitch who is a good man in his heart, she is raised by Miss Havisham who uses Estella to take her revenge from men. Until the end of the novel Magwitch seen as a bad criminal and Miss Havisham is seen as an angel. However, at the end of the novel both readers and Pip see that it is the opposite. Second victimazation is instead of marrying Pip who loves her with deepest love and has a kindheart she marries Drummble who treaths her badly. The message that Dickens gives with Estella’s live is nobility and happiness are not connected with person’s social status. Because of Estella’s behaviours on Pip we never see her as a sympathetic character but at the end of the novel we forgive her for her treatment of Pip. As readers we can not hope Estella to be emotional character because as her real family, she grows up like in prison. She lives in Satis house without meeting with new people and daylight. Her stepmother is a half-erased woman who always wears her wedding gown. Estella’s past, roots and present do not relate to warm relations. However, Pip has a really good friends (Joe and Biddy) who presents the kindness, iner nobility and warm relations. In conclusion, (except Pip) Estella is my favourite character because of three reasons. First is “situational irony” that we mostly see it on Estella among the characters on the book and this makes book very attractive. Second is, Estella is the true victim of society’s values. So, like Pip, we should forgive her and the last reason is Estella carries a message: among all the badness we must make good choices to be good person. I really liked Dickens’ Great Expectations and enjoyes while reading it.
