In my opinion the two main media industry that export the most are the
television and music. Television is something that
will all enjoy; we like to watch things that will fulfill does areas that we have not yet fulfilled by reality. At the same time it does what other media do, informs, there is news, entertain, etc. The only problem is that you cannot talk back to the people that are on your screen.
In the other hand you have music; there are many things you can find within music, you decide what you like the most. However the reason why United States can export its music is because music is music, and it unites the world, people like rhythms and they don’t even have to understand what they are saying. So music tends to go a long way, even farther then
television, because you need to understand what people are saying in order to enjoy the programs, unless it has been translated, which costs money, whereas music doesn’t have to be translated.
Television is very
powerful, for many reasons, there is nothing better then food for the eyes. However music is also great, it''s food for the soul and ears. Far better then music and television there is the mix of both of these things, MTV provides this mix. Many people are attracted to the music, other to the videos and shows, and there are those that are attracted to the combination.
I believe that MTV has one of the most powerful industries around the world, which is the reason why it exports so much. The viewers of MTV have reached one billion people with 18 different languages in 164 countries. When I started researching who was the largest exporter in broadcast, I thought it was CNN; CNN doesn’t have half of the viewers that MTV has.
MTV’s success doesn’t only come from the fact that they have music views, there are a lot of other channels that play music videos as well, for example, VH1, CMT (Country Music Television), BET (Black Entertainment Television), Fuse, etc. The MTV has all types of music, from Country to Rock, so it attracts the mass. Also MTV has shows that interest people between the age of 13 to 35. The reality shows, the issues that they discuss, like AIDS, drugs, alcohol, things that other channels would be scared to discuss or bring up. Unless the TV station is saying its bad it will not transmit it. However MTV will bring those teenagers and young people that face the problems everyday, and let them be the ones to explain what it’s all about. MTV has helped us to see the part of the world that other stations will not let us see; they will uncover the lies and show its core. MTV is the true meaning of free speech and it will stand to anything and anyone to defend it, or at least it’s what they make us perceive.
MTV earns a lot of money a year; it is amazing how much MTV can get from cable subscribers, new media and advertising. Especially internationally given that 8 of the 10 MTV viewers live outside the United States. There many types of MTV, for example MTV Latin America and MTV India. The ratings of MTV are way up in the air, given that it in many languages.
Even though TV and Music are demanded a lot, there is something even more powerful in which these also combine with. This is the Internet; it is so powerful given that it combines all the Medias within it. You can do everything on the Internet, but US sells a lot through it, it advertises so many things. US does many things through Internet. Lets say for example Music and Television, they are both advertised within the Internet. MTV’s website has a lot of hits a day, and through search engines people can download music. Before most downloadable music was free so thesUS engines were not making any money out of it, but now they charge to be able to download so they are exporting their music.
I mentioned MTV but there are also many other channels that people subscribe to in many other countries; for example CNN. CNN provides news, manly US news but the truth is that most countries depend on the US economy so it is in the people’s interest to know what is going on in US. For example, my country depends on the tourists that come to our country, so when 9/11 happened we knew that our economy would suffer given that tourists were scared to fly. There is people from around the world living in US so many people have family in the US and if something happens they want to know. Other countries have US news in their stations but the quality and details on the news are not the same, or they are not as good.
