Most people in the world know Transylvania ( Erdély in Hungarian ) as being the country of the historical Dracula.
But the Transylvania of the modern world is entirely different from it. Once Transylvania belonged to Hungary. Transylvania was mainly populated by tribes speaking Hungarian. A
language which is not really similar to any European languages. Finnish is close to Hungarian in some respects but no Hungarian can understand it. After the Second World War Transylvania/Erdély was attached to Romania. The great Romanian dictator did his best to make Transylvania be inhabited by Romanians. The Hungarians whose number amounted to one and a half million were surpressed, and people could not use their native language/ magyar as an official language. There are still arguments, and disagreements in the Romanian Governement about the use of Hungarian. There are over one million Hungarians left in Romania. I am one of them. I am quite proud of my nation. We speak Magyar which is regarded to be one of the oldest languages in the world. According to researchers at Sorbonne University Hungarian contains the most words from the once unique languge. It encompasses 68
percent of that language whereas English 4 percent. It seems to be strange. What is more Dracula had Hungarian relatives, and perhaps he spoke some Hungarian as well.
