About a month back, India got its new
president, Mrs. Pratibha Patil. Before the elections a lot of controversy was created about her candidature, for many reasons, which I won’t like to discuss now. Besides that there were discussions in the media about who should occupy the highest office of president of India, great resurgent, modern, vibrant India. Should he be a
political or non-political person? Many
names were proposed, some political and some non political like Narayana Murthy or Amitabh Bachhan or even a second term for Abdul Kalam.
In a survey conducted by a private news channel, in which ordinary
people of the country were asked to name their
choice, to every body’s surprise non political candidates were people’s first choice while political candidates were placed at the bottom in terms of choice, even when it included many prominent names. Why such an unexpected verdict? Well, the reasons are not hard to find out. Our political
leaders, by their conduct, have lost the faith of the people. They have failed to deliver in last 60 years. For an ordinary citizen, a political leader means, a corrupt, communal, selfish person whose only aim of coming to power is to gather money for himself and for his generations. The level of the leaders has fallen to such an extent that Many of those sitting in parliament and assemblies are facing charges of such heinous crimes as rape, murder, dacoity etc. Yes, there are some exceptions, but the system has degenerated so much in last 60 years that a few exceptions does not make a mark.
Post libralisation India is changing fast. It is progressing in almost every sphere, be it business, trade, science & technology, IT etc. New targets are being achieved by our scientists. Narayan Murthy, Aziz Premji, Ratan Tata, Sunil Mittal, Abdul Kalam and so many other names to mention are becoming role models for the youth of today. People want that their leaders be the persons who have achieved new milestones in their respective fields, who can inspire masses, who can
really bring the change and those who can really take India forward and make it a developed country by 2020. They are tired of the rotten system in which our politicians have brought us.So let us stand up and vow to get rid of this rotten system and bring forward the people who are worthy of occupying such high offices. We can really achieve this because we have greatest power of democracy with us.
