Taxi woes! Most of us have been victimized by unscruplous
Taxi drivers in our lifetime. There are those who are rampant outside strategic
shopping malls pouncing on innocent bystanders and demanding unimaginable amounts from passengers. I hailed a taxi once from Midvalley shopping centre in the pouring rain. At first the driver allowed me in without making his demands.Halfway through the journey( mind you it was still pouring heavily at night) he insisted that he should be paid Rm 50. His reasons for the ridiculous demand was that if he would have taken a passenger from the Middle-east he would have made better
money. When i refused pay, he became abusive and began calling me "stupid woman " etc. He drove recklessly and continued to mumble throughout the journey. I have had many such experiences where the taxi drivers demand money saying that the area where I wish to be dropped is void of passengers and therefore I should be paying for their fares to and fro.I urge the authorities to change the system of taxi stands and instead introduce the coupon system at all shopping centres whereby the passenger pays a fixed amount at the counter and hands the coupon to the driver who without arguing takes the passenger to the desired location. The coupon system has already worked wonders in KL Sentral and Sunway Pyramid mall. Why not introduce it at ALL shopping centres that are popular with
tourists? Before Malaysia at can be promoted to a
global level, such a convenience should be implemented. Extortionists like these only tarnish the name of their own country. This also deters tourists who throng daily to shopping malls.I hope the government will implement this immediately.
