On career development “I cant sing, dance or act. What else would I be but a talk show host? “said David Letterman (Riser’s Digest, Quotable Quotes – September, 2007 issue) Letterman earned an estimated $40 million between June 2006 and June 2007 according to Forbes. Com. As published in the Philippine Star on Sept. 30, 2007. Is it really necessary for one to undergo decades of participation to be successful in his/her career? In his article Degree Or Non-degree that Is The Question Dong Masajo of the Phil. Star on March 24, 2001 had this answer “The great achievers of this world are living proof of this: Housewife-turned-President Coty Aquino, Janitor-turned-business Taipan Lucio Tan…,Not to Mention,, The richest man in the world Bill Gates, himself a college drop-out…Then there are those who were fortunate enough to have formulated game plan early on and have succeeded in pursuing their dreams without veering away from them… Yet there is one common thread that binds these successful people, game plan or no game plan: That insatiable desire to continuously excel. The bottom line is, whether you acquire that need to become the best that you can be early on (Which, more often than not, does result in a college degree) or much later in life, It’s never too late to become better. There is after all, Just one cardinal rule in the real world: it’s hard work, not luck, that leads one to success.” On September 17, 2007, Ana Marie Pamintuan in their column Sketches stated that “data compiled by the Philippine Business For Education (PBEd) show that 6.8 Million Filipinos never went to school, 9.6 million are not functionally literated and 11.6 million youths are not school. Out of 100 children who enter in grade one in public schools, only 58 percent will make it to high school; a dismissal 14 percent will finish college.” Other statistics, however, show that “unskilled workers and laborers make up the largest sector of the employed at 31.5 percent while farmers and fishermen are second at 18 percent. Emma Fabian, Chief of the national statistics office, said it was possible ‘there are not enough available jobs” for the educated while lees-educated had and easier time finding jobs as unskilled laborers. In these data appeared in an employed Skilled Workers Push Jobless Rate To 7.8% In July in the Philippine Star issue of September 15, 2007 which also stated that “high school graduates make up 45.5 percent of the unemployed while college graduates make up 39.4 percent”. Boo Chanco, A respected columnist in the Philippine Star, who had long urged his alma matter the university of the Philippines to scrap “useless” course like Mass Communication (which he himself took up) and long time critic of CHED “ for allowing the proliferation of diploma mills, specially in nursing wrote the following in his column demand and supply this article “At Last, Some Hope In Ched”. When romy Neri was appointed to CHEd “his marching order is pretty specific: make college education more relevant to jobs after graduation. It is about time that government really did something to address the problem of jobless college graduates in the face of unfilled vacancies in local businesses… its is unfair for poor parents whose children end up as students in diploma mills. They beg and borrow for tuition money in the hope that their child will be a nurse or an accountant or whatever… only to find out after the child’s graduation that the child is unemployable because the diploma mill didn’t really impart any useful skill. Putting the problem of diploma mills in nursing aside, there is also the matter of career counseling that or young people should be given. So many of our youth end up taking course that are not likely to open up a bright future for them… like Mass Communication. CHEd should have moved a long time ago to stop the diploma mills from offering these courses which happen to be profitable but useless.” Here are my own comments which appeared at inbox of the Philippine Star on the following dates: “Past tuition fee hikes were not justified to the very low ranking of educational institutions in rp despite the dregulation “(May 12, 2006) “If only unjustifiable tuition fee hikes were reined in, we would not have experienced bankruptcies among the pre-need companies”(May 4, 2006) “Unlimited funds for ‘mardi-gras’, fiestas, record breaking feats for Guinness but none for school buildings and teachers?(June 8 2006) “While others steal millions, the ombudsman sow fear on maligned teachers as they try to recover their forced advances.” (June 14, 2007) “Banish idiots from TV and bring back revered English-speaking Ilardes to help us regain our English proficiency.” (August 13, 2004) “Since corporate governance is needed for the withdrawal of sponsorships on TV shows causing mass maleducation.” (August 17, 2004) In the afore-mentioned article of Ms. Pamintuan, when a trustee of the PBEd asked a student “what she wanted to be when she grew up. The girl replied that she wanted to join the Sex Bomb dancers.”
