History of Parintins
During the exploratory voyages of the English Crown in 1796, the Island Tupinambarana today
Municipality of Parintins, was discovered by Captain of Milícias José Pedro Cordovil. The region was inhabited by Indians-Tupinambá from which emerged the name of the island, and also by
tribes Sapupé, Peruviana, Mundurucu, Mawe and Parintins. In the year of 1803, a religious mission under the direction of Joseph brother of Chagas, called
Vila Nova da Rainha, installed in the place. In 1833, the mission was elevated to the
category of Parish, changing the name to Nossa Senhora do Carmo de Tupinambarana. On 15 October 1852 the elevation of Vila is accomplished, then moving on to be named Vila Bela''s Empress. On December 25, 1880 the seat of the municipality came to be named Parintins, coming behalf of the Indians Parintins or Parintintins, former inhabitants of the place. Back in 1991, during the administrative
division, the Municipality was composed of four districts: Parintins (
headquarters), the Parana Ramos, Nhamundá and Xiburi. Later, the district was created on the Isle of Cotias, who in 1950 rose to be the municipality of Nhamundá. Extinct the old division district, the City of Parintins is the town of Parintins (headquarters) and the agrovilas of Mocambo and Cabury.
