The Qur'an & Modern
ScienceCompatible or Incompatible?
The Qur'an, the main source of Islamic faith, is a
book believed by all Muslims to be of completely Divine origin. In Dr. Zakir Naik's book The Qur'an & Modern
Science he gives an analysis of the Qur'an, in the light of
scientific discoveries. The Quran is not a book of science but a book of 'signs'; i.e. ayats. There are more than six thousand 'signs' in the Qur'an of which more than a thousand deal with science.
The creation of the earth is described by astrophysicists, as the 'Big Bang'. The universe was one big mass that separated by a 'Big Bang' which resulted in galaxies and then the stars, planets, sun, moon, etc.
The Qur'an contains the following verse:
"Do not the unbelievers see
that the heavens and the earth
were joined together(as one
unit of creation), before we clove them asunder?"
Coincidence? I think not.
Consider the rest of the verse:
"We made from water
Every living thing. Will
they not then believe?"
Modern research has revealed that most organisms consist of 50% to 90% water and every living thing requires water for its existence.
Consider:
"Proclaim! (or Read!)
In the name
of thy Lord and Cherisher,
Who created-
created man, out of
A(mere) clot
of congealed blood."
The arabic word alaq besides meaning a congealed clot of blood also means something that clings, a leech-like substance. Dr. Keith Moore observed and compared the initial stage of the embryo under a microscope with a diagram of a leech and he was astonished at the resemblance of the two.
In conclusion my opinion is that the scientific facts in the Qur'an clearly prove it is divine. I only listed a few examples and there are many more studies done on this subject. No human could have produced a book, fourteen hundred years ago, that would contain scientific facts, to be discovered later. The 'signs' in the Qur'an invite you to realize the purpose of your life on earth, to live in harmony with nature.
