Mirza Hawas Luckhnavi..A lesser Known Poet

Article Summary   by:sharib     Original Author: S.I.M Rizvi(sharib)

At the very outset, let me make it very clear that this article is not a review of any book or work. It is, in fact , a story of introduction of an old poet about whom I have never heard during my entire upbringing, schooling, and college life at Lucknow.
Being a Luckhnavi, I was never happy with the kind of Hindi/Urdu I heard at Nagpur. I left Lucknow in early nineties. That was the time when my association with Urdu books ,News papers and Magazines was almost severed, and it had seen its lowest ebb by 2004 or so. At Nagpur my Hindustani was changing fast to adapt to the colloquial Hindi/Urdu language prevalent in Central India. For quite some time ,I had a feeling in the words of Nida Fazli:
Zubaan milee hai magar ham zubaan nahin milta
{though I have the ability to communicate but I do not find a listener with whom I can share my language and feelings}. That was the time when I came across an Urdu book “Mirza Taqui Hawas-Personality and Work”.
As I had been starving for Urdu books {not that those were not available in Nagpur, but I was not getting time to have them for some reasons} I immediately started browsing through the book. Here I met with Mirza Hawas Lucknavi. The book was a published thesis , a doctoral work by Prof. S.M.Aqa Haider Husain Abidi, done at Nagpur University( published as book in 2002). I was astonished to see such a great poet about whom I was not even aware of, till then. Hawas says :
Doston ne hame na pahchanaa,
Shakl yeh , ishq ne Hamaree kee.
{ Even the friends could not recognize me, such is the impact of Ishq on me} .
Tumahr-e dar pe khade beqarar hain do –teen,
Nigah-e lutf ke ummedwaar hain do-teen.
{In order to get a benevolent glimpse from the beloved, there are waiting two –three admirers at the doorsteps of yours}
Main bhi hoon bais-e- ejad Hawas ek shai kaa,
Meri khatir mere malik ne kiya gham paida.
{I (Hawas ) am also the cause of creation for at least one item(of this world), for , as if God has created sorrow (gham) for me}. Like me , Porf.Abidi had also never heard of this worthy poet before. Once in a bait-bazee(antakhsharee) competition he came across this couplet narrated by a student:
“Zahid ka dil na Khatir-e Maikhawar Todiye,
Sau baar tauba keejiya sau baar todiye
{Pls. do not be discourteous to a pious man for the sake of wine.i.e you may pledge not to take wine for the sake of the preacher, however, there is no harm if you make and break your pledge hundred times…...(this is what courtesy is..luckhnavi style)}.Such a couplet should have come from nowhere else but Avadh from where the following couplet had come through Meer Anees:
khayaal-e Khatir-e Ahbab Chaihye hardam,
Anees thaee-ss na lag jai aabgino ko”.
{It is very essential to take care of ones friends all the time, for, the relationship is very delicate like a bubble in water}. This couplet drew the attention of Prof.Abidi and he discussed about this “sher” with Prof. Masood Hasan Rizvi “Adeeb” . Adeeb informed Prof.Abidi that this couplet belonged to a lesser known poet “Mirza Hawas Luckhnavi”. Hawas was one of the talented disciples of Mushafi Luckhnavi an Ustad in his own right. Prof. Abidi's desire to know more and more about this poet led him to a Ph.D. on him.Prof Abidi in his thesis has very aptly compared the couplets of Ghalib and Hawas which are quite similar in contents and meter.
For example Hawas says:
Bekasi Hi ne na duniya ko taja mere baad,
Gham bhi marquad mere baitha raha mere baad,
Apne Marn-e ka mujhe gham nahin per yeh gham hai,
Kaun hoga hadaf-e Teer-e bala mere baad”
{Misfortune did not leave this world ,even if I had ceased to live. The sorrow remained seated at my grave even after I had gone. I am not pained at my death but what bothers me is, that who will face the fury of misfortunes once I am not there} And on the same lines Ghalib says :
AAy-e hai bekasi-ay Ishq pe rona Ghalib ,
Kis ke ghar Jaega Sailab-e Bala mere baad
{cosidering himself to be the connoisseur of Ishq and the worst sufferer of destiny, Ghalib says, some times, I feel pity on the hapless condition of Ishq as to who will give shelter to this unwanted entity after I have gone}. It is difficult to judge who influenced whom i.e. Ghalib influenced Hawas or Hawas influencedGhalib. However ,as mentioned by Prof. Abidi, Hawas had completed his Deewan while Ghalib was still in his childhood.
Among other things, Hawas has composed marsia also
Rukhst ko Husain Aya jab Qabr-e Muhammad par,
Pahle to bahut roya who aashique paighambar,
Phir dast-e adab basta kee arz yeh ro ro kar,
Mujh ko safar-e wadah dar pesh hai ai- sarwar,
Mahboob-e Khuda haq mein mere yeh dua keejiyo,
Yaarab mere pyaar-e ko too sabr ata kejiyo.
{When Imam Husain came to the grave of Prophet while departing from Madina, first, the admirer of Prophet, wept remembering the prophet. Then with folded hands and wet eyes, requested Prophet, I am proceeding for he journey promised, O beloved of Allah prey from Allah for endurance to your beloved i.e. Husain}.
