A name that has become synonymous with the word
comeback is Mike Tyson. You either love him or you hate him. Whatever people
think of this once great boxer he continues to create headlines, whether it be for the right reasons or not. So, is another Tyson
comeback on the cards in 2008? Let''s take a brief look at his career and some of his other failed attempts at re-establishing himself. Michael Gerard Tyson was born on June 30, 1966. He grew up in a rough neighborhood and was continually getting into fist-
fights as a youngster. At the age of fifteen he was already gaining a reputation as an amateur. Eleven of his first fights saw his opponent hit the canvas in round one. Trained by his mentor and friend Gus D''Amato, Tyson flourished. Nicknamed ''Kid Dynamite'', his reputation soon saw him turning professional in 1986. He became the youngest heavyweight in boxing history when he defeated Trevor Berbick on Nov 22nd, 1986 in Las Vegas. adparams.getadspec(''c_billboard1''); Tyson won the unified title in 1988 and held onto it until 1990. In this time Tyson showed why he had the credentials to be one of the greatest boxers of all time. He was not like some of the sluggish and sometimes lackluster heavyweights we were so used to seeing holding onto one another as the time ticked away for twelve excruciatingly boring rounds of so called entertainment. Tyson was pure, raw energy. A young athletic fighting machine, chomping at the bit, ready to come out fighting. And fight he did. The by now familiar Tyson with his thick neck and black pumps with no socks was becoming a well loved icon. People were tuning into his fights in their millions. Tyson fights gave us the excitement that we hadn''t seen since the likes of Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard. So what went wrong? Married to Robin Givens and managed by Don King, Tyson seemingly lost his mind. His interest in boxing waned. Anyone who truly new Mike Tyson would find this unbelievable. Tyson was not just an animal as he was portrayed by some of the press, he was a great lover of boxing and an authority on it''s history. Tyson was one of the most knowledgeable fighters you could meet. He would sit for hours watching old fights like Marciano and Sugar Ray Robinson. He could talk for hours on the subject. In 1990 he lost his title to Buster Douglas, but it was plain for everyone to see that the wreck that stood in the ring with Douglas was not the Mike Tyson we knew and clearly the man had problems. It was obvious to Tyson fans that he was being manipulated by Givens and her mother, who had got their heads together with Don King to drain Tyson of his wealth.
