There is nothing unusual about conquering the Everest in the 21st cetury. So many have already done it ever since Edmond Hilary and Tensing had reached the very top of the peak in the fifties.
But when
Mark English did it in 2006 it was nig news. There was world acclaim for this man. What was so special about the whole thing.
Mark English is an extraordinary man. For 22 years he had only one thought, one desire, and one goal—to conquer Everest. Last year (2006) he did it. He became the first person to do so without legs.
Mark had lost his
legs in one of his previous attempts to conquer Mount Cook in 1982. Both of them had to be amputated to ensure his survival. No one –even in his wildest dreams—thought that he would be
able to climb Everest with his
artificial legs. But he did it after 22 years!
So many able
bodied had perished in the snow while attempting to reach the top. But mark accomplished what so few able bodied did without legs-on artificial legs.
His indomitable courage is awe inspiring. He has proven to the whole world so eloquently that one can succeed whether he is rich or poor, ugly or handsome, crippled or able bodied, educated or illiterate.
