Effective team building

Article Summary by: Ahens

A
well-managed
team
is
the cornerstone
of successA team can be
successful when
its members are able to accomplish something, by working
together rather than individually. A team’s success and progress is the
responsibility of every member, irrespective of the hierarchy. Being part of a
team does not imply the dissolution of your individualism. Instead, it helps
build your identity by highlighting your strengths and potential. Team building can
effectively bring out the strength of the team members, so that the different
personalities can complement each other. Strong communication always forms the
basis of team building. There must be a high level of synchronisation amongst
members. This coexistence can
be achieved by having team building activities. These activities are a
fun-filled approach to achieve goals by making work enjoyable and gratifying. However,
there has to be a consistency i.e. there should be a follow-up done, so that
people do not think of it as a waste of time and efforts. The aim behind team
building is to encourage members with expertise in certain areas to contribute
to the team’s goals. If the team is not in harmony, people will follow their
own individual ideas and opinions, thereby causing a conflict. Lack of
co-ordination between diverse personalities is the biggest factor that leads to
failure at the workplace. To manage a team
effectively, certain pointers need to be in place. Be sure to divide responsibilities
between all members and be clear about their roles.  Confusion can be avoided through effective
allocation of tasks and duties. There should be space for doubts and the team leader
should be respected, not feared. The decision making process should not be
confined to the higher-ups. Try and involve the entire team whenever possible. This
will ensure better productivity and a sense of trust and belonging among
members. Team building also
boosts self-confidence and morale of people involved. It is important to not
let interpersonal issues or egos create havoc within a team. Showing
appreciation and giving timely feed-back can also serve to motivate the employees,
since they are constantly bogged down by stress and competition. Teams are not
static; they grow and change with time. The secret behind effective team
management is to recognise the strong qualities of each member and mobilize
them to work towards a common goal, by giving them their space to learn and
grow.
