Eyes

Article Summary by: windslash

Original Author: K. T. Mohamed
“Eyes” is a story of how society sometimes can be very
hostile towards its less fortunate members.  The character in the story, Abdullah, was not blessed with handsome features.  In fact, he looks so horrible that people around him compare him to apes.  Many individuals do not just laugh at him but also treats him as garbage.
The only person, aside from his mother, who treated him nicely, was Leela a blind beggar.  Leela did not judge Abdullah through his looks even if everyone laughed at their unlikely union because she said that being blind; her medium of knowing a person is through her heart.  This is an appealing thing toward today’s society.  We often forget that it is not the outside appearance that matters.  The purity of one’s heart is of more importance and thus, should be considered.
At the end of the story, hope of giving sight to Leela aroused.  But because of Abdullah’s fear that his beloved Leela would ridicule him once she laid sight on him, Abdullah did not let it happen.  Unfortunately, Leela’s blindness, which enabled Abdullah to be a part of her life, was also the reason why she perished due to an accident.  Until the end, she wanted to see the face of the man she loved, but failed to do so, because secretly, Abdullah possesses fright within his heart of what Leela would feel upon seeing him.  It is sad that due to a society’s wrong practice of ridiculing persons who are different than others, a pure heart like Abdullah’s, are corrupted to deviate from the righteous path.
