Are they still valid - is it bullying?
After the frurore in Bloemfontein South Africa at the Free State University the people of South Africa are saying on various Radio Stations and talk shows and on television that it is an act of barbarism and that it does not have a place in todays society. or another view is that it is bullies doing this under the guise fo initiation.
This incident in Bloemfontein is yet to be proved whether it is racially motivated or not. What is very sad it that it is done by younger and younger educated individuals. What does the future hold for South Africa if the youth of this country is thinking like this?
Campus initiation rites were mainly from upper class schools and universities.
I imagine it started out as a bit of fun. But it unfortunately has attracted bad elements. By thaI mean people that possibly have cruel streaks or deviant behaviour. These people who have these behaviour streaks usually target those who are timid or younger that themselfves Possibly they were the school bully when they were younger
The other word that is being bandied about is racism. What happened at Boemfontein University was that this "Initiation" was done to cleaners not to fellow students-new students. These four students who perpetrated this act maintain that it a joke and that it was a project. But the country is not buying this. The video clip was aired on television, and showed the last part of the prank where the cleaners were forced to eat stew with urine in it. It has also been alleged that this film clip was only leaked when one of the students girlfriend leaked the clip when her boyfriend one of the four students dumped her.
Intitation ceremonies around the world have also been known to cause death and injury. What does this say about our society today?
