Do you know which is the first Indian
amusement park ? Appu Ghar! It was inaugurated on 19th of November, 1984 and took its
name from the elephant mascot of the 1982 Asian Games. This
amusement park is in an area of 14.75 acres of land near Prakati Maidan, New Delhi. The cost for rides when it started in 1984 were Rs 1, Rs 2 and Rs 3 and it stands Rs 250 and Rs 220 now.
For almost 24 years, entertaining the old and young of New Delhi this amusement park had shut down its operations on Sunday, 17th of February, exactly at 6 pm. The closure of Appu Ghar was a long coming, ever since the International Amusement Limited lease of land from India Trade Promotion Organisation expired in 1999.
Appu Ghar was the brain child of our former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She wanted to set up India’s first amusement park and took keen interest and met International Amusement Park chairman Gyan Vijeswar at Sweden in 1982 with the proposal to set up the park. Her dream came true years later when then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi inaugurated the park on 19th of November, 1984. She was no more then....
Appu Ghar was the most popular hangout for the young and children of Delhi... Especially in November when the Trade Fair begins.
