Reflections on the Old Testament Books-Sodom and Gomorrah
Archaeology has made it clear that the
cities of Sodom and
Gomorrah are now beneath the Dead Sea waters. It could be that there was a huge earth quake around 1900 BC which buried these two
cities. Moses built on this natural event to show
God’s wrath and punishment on two distant cities the details of the destruction of which the Israelites hardly knew.
It was the intention of Moses to show that his god was powerful, angry and unforgiving. Many a time he is pictured a war god or mountain god appearing behind the flames of fire or behind a bush. Like many of the tribal gods of the times, He was ruthless and possessive.
