Abraham, who might have lived around 2000 BC, was the father of the tribe and his god was Yahweh. The god of the

Hebrews is the god of Abraham. Yahweh became the patron God of the tribe. Abraham worshipped Yahweh declaring that he was as strong as the mountain, high and exalted and abiding forever. 


After a period of nomadic peregrination the Hebrews settled in Egypt where they were enslaved. Moses led the people under the protection of Yahweh. Legend speaks of a path opened through the Red sea for Moses and his followers. Modern science reveals that an earthquake could be a possible explanation.  After further nomadic wanderings, the Hebrews later settled themselves in the Palestine


The Hebrews got acquainted themselves with the animalistic cults of the inhabitants.


Baal was the god of the neighboring rich nation and Yahweh the god of the poor Hebrews. There were strong and continuous struggle between the followers of Yahweh and that of Baal. Prophets belong to this period who supported and upheld their god vociferously. The religion of the Hebrews was  simply a ritual. The people feared their god and offered him sacrifices, Amos and Hosea changed the religion form ceremonial ritual to a way of life. Fear of god became love of god. Amos even projected Yahweh as a universal god!
