One study followed 681 elderly North Americans and found that those who eat fish twice a week had, by 36%, a lower risk of macular degeneration. The other, held in Australia, followed 2,335 people over 49 years for five years and concluded that consumption of fish at least once a week reduced by 40% the risk of the disease. It is expected in about five years for the results of another study, underway in the United States, the effects of intake of fish oils and lutein, a natural antioxidant, on the “macula lutea”.
