The Tanzanian ports authority (TPA) will expand the port of dar-es salaam to enhjance its maritime activiyies
.The port will also install newlyacquired multi billion marine surveillance equipmebnt in march that wiill track ships movement and receive distress calls .
Ones installed ,it will be the third in africa to acquire the equip ment after the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA)and the port of South Africa .How ever the port will continue to relay signals opf distrtress to theKPA headquarters in Mombasa.
THe center serves ships ion the sSomalia ,Tanzania and seychelles waters .
The grand expansion progtramme wopuld involve dredging of the entrance cdahnnel to accomodate ships of variouass sizes.
It would also involve the deepening and widening opf the port entrance ,dredging and strengtheni8ng of the berths and the procurement of the handling equipment.
The project is expected to reduce ship port staying time and turn around time lower freight chergas .reduce transit time and high rating of port safety standards The new lookm port is expected to start itas operations this year .
Officials said that the wear and tear of the port had seenoperations out grow the capacity of the port .The lack of capacity at the port had made commercial vessels that are registered with the TPA to dry dock in the neighjbouring countries ports .
Currently ,the ports dockyard only consists oif a boat slipway with two rails and two rail lifting systems ,boat shadee ,wood work and machine shop ,plate shop and service jeety ..The authority is planning to produce a floating dock and rehabilitate the workshop .
