Article Summary by: varghese

Original Author: Prof. P.A.Varghese
Mohammed Ghori’s conquests
After the Gaznis it was the turn of Muhmmad Ghori who came in the last quarter of the 12th
century. He defeated Prithiviraj Chauhan in 1192 AD, and later Ghori took Ajmer by assault.
He destroyed the pillars and foundations of the idol temples and built instead mosques and pillars with precepts of Islam, and the Islamic laws were established.
Next year he conquered Jayachandra of Kanauj. A general massacre, rapine, and pillage followed. Later he plundered The Gahadvad treasuries at Asni and Varanasi. His aides rejoiceds that in Benares alone they destroyed one thousand temples and raised mosques on their foundations". The slaughter of Hindus (at Varanasi) was immense and none were spared. The women and children were enslaved and sold all over the Islamic world. The Buddhist complex at Sarnath was ransacked at this time, and the Bhikshus were slaughtered.
Ghori’s lieutenant was also busy with his own conquests and we will read about them in the next piece.
