Science and Religion

Book Summary by: Lelayna

Original Author: Dennys Robson Girardi
This abstract was translated from Ciência e Religião
Two realities are placed in front of the man. Of a side, there is the religion that makes the man has a base to consist himself
in the world, conferring him the hope of living, the belief in something bigger and the security of a future life. In the other side, bursts the sciece that shows the man the reality of a visible and sensible world . For many centuries an endless discussion between science and religion was supported, where the religion was identified as faith and the science as reason. Even João Paulo II thought about this question, and of his reflection about it appeared the text "fides et ratio", that had as objective presents the necessity of a half term between the two realities. Each one of these realities has one strong trend to reveal itself as the sovereign. Science makes everything to show that the religion is wrong and that it is incomplete and the religion uses uncountables arguments to say that science is useless. Sometimes starts an unnecessary dispute, where each one demands its power and authority on the other. However the both consist completely distinct realities , but not opposite. Nothing more they are than faces of one same reality. In this way, all this discussion only serves to one assists on the purification of another. In so far as the science presents the defective points of the religion, the religion sees itself in the obligation to give a fitting reply and even more purified to the questions of the faith. It is evident the existence of fundamentalist religions that do not have the courage of make itself ready to the questionings of science, those are incoherent religions and they are out of the dynamics of the life, therefore it creates a parallel and total superstitious world. The true religion has the courage of place itself in a discussion with the science, in this shock the both complete and purificate themselves. The religion feels innocuous without the reason and science has conscience of its finitude.
Science knows that it can only go up to one established point, that, moreover, doesn´t have an acceptable rational explanation, thus it keeps silent and let the religion answers to the last questions. Albert Einstein, one of the best scientists of the last times, known world-wide for the theory of the relativity that provided the great revolution of the physics, wrote in one of his texts: "This situation can be express by an image: the science without religion is cripple, and the religion without science is blind."
