Book Summary by: akpor

Original Author: DR E. ERAGBIA
IDENTITY CRISIS IN AMERICA
In this work attempt was made to reflect on the issue of race and racism that was a major
problem in America in the early stage of the nation building. We have writers like Martin Luther King (jr), Howard McGrarry, Martin R. Delary, Marcus M. Garvey, Amiri Baraka and a host of others dedicated a lot of their effort on the subject matter.
The idea of these right activist and thinkers seems to be regarded as a philosophy of the Black Mind as it was channel to the plight of a particular race in the America nation. These set of thinkers were branded “The Black Theorist”, i.e. those who have propounded opinions and suggestion on how the problem of identity crisis among the blacks in America can be resolved. These people believes that the problem of race, racism and identity crisis can be solved if American institution are so made up to treat all people equal irrespective of race and colour of their skin, hence they claim that there is no difference between blacks and white, but see them all as equal human race.
The concept of race and racism is seen as more of ideological work of sociologists and philosophers, the white Americas of that age thought that these ideologists are only looking for national recognition hence they claim that there is an identity crisis or racial problem in the American society. To clarify this argument a definition of race and racism is very important. Race or racism is define as a subdivision of humanity having certain physical characteristic as colour of skin, colour and type of hair, shape of eyes and nose in common, or a human groups that are having in common language, cultures and ancestral line. The problem of identity crisis, race and racism was overcome through the introduction of the affirmative action, the general acceptability of the black race and lately the active participation of the blacks in politics, military and national services.
The problem of identity crisis, race and racism or even racial problem was a very big problem in the then American society, there has to be various actions and reactions like civil disobedience and mass movement against the treatment meted out to the blacks
