Child abuse is a clear and present danger plaguing our
continent. It can be described as physical maltreatment of the child
and the denial of the child's rights.Of course, every child hasrights as clearly stated in the charter of the United Nations and its agencies responsible for
children's welfare such as UNESCO and UNICEF.
In Africa, acts of child abuse are usually committed in polygamous homes as well as in extended family settings where children who have lost either or both parents are left in the care of distant relatives or guardians and step-parents who treat them as if they are animals. They physically maltreat these children and force them to do things that they may not allow their own children to do.They use them as house-helps to serve their own children. In extreme cases, such children fall into the hands of wicked-hearted people who may rape them and even kill them for ritual purposes.
The African Union on their own part need to intensify its effort at dealing with child abuse and the problem it has caused in our
continent. For instance, proven cases of child abuse should be properly addressed in a court of law and used to set examples for others. The AU should also embark on projects that will enlighten step-parents on the need to change their attitude towards other people's children in their care.
