Let me start with the common statement –“No rains or drought” ie Scanty rainfall
a Let‘s say we receive 100mm rainfall, that means an area of 1 SqMtr. We receive 100 Litres. This 100 litres would be sufficient for the entire years harvesting if utilized properly, economically and judiciously. Hence the need for a man made water conservation methods a now that we have retained all the rainwater and put to best use of it. What do we do then is to allow this water to feed the grass in and around. Because we have a little extra water apart from the normal supply by the supply agency. Now you get to have or develop a small garden with grass and bushes. Next time it rains the roots of these grass will make way for the water to go deeper into the soil, prevents soil run off. So we get to see a more greenery meaning more water penetration. Now the moisture content or the water held by the soil increases, that means the grass and the bushes will last longer than before. Then this cycle of more water infiltration and more moisture content in the top sub soil. This way we see that the water makes way into to the soil along the roots of the grass and the bushes, this cycle repeats for a couple of years. Which will mean a increased water percolation a increased holding capacity a more water a now comes the commercial benefits, once we get the initial rains our agricultural activities gain momentum, the sowing and plantation takes on early days, and this cycle of a increased agri-greenery will make way for better economy and forestry, because you have the required fodder and wood for your daily requirements. We will now start to feel the pleasure and luxury that the water conservation and harvesting will provide.
5 or 6 years past we will see greenery all around. The plants that have grown to be big trees will now give cool weather conditions. The breeze that blows will now be pleasing and cool. “Don’t we all go out for a change to a hill station, or a park or to a resort full of …..” well then it is that occasional effect that is brought in to our locality.
How will it help us in getting the luxury. Well if you now start living in a cool weather the weather prevailing is not just as good but better than the air conditioned rooms. So you will get to live in an naturally air cooled and conditioned atmosphere, which means we don’t need to switch on the cooling appliances. Well don’t we now accept the fact that you don’t need huge power requirements, if yes, then it is a great relief on my part for you will start acting on this direction. Now that we have come to the conclusion that the water conservation will help our well being. To emphasize the after effects, Once the demand for power is minimized, then the need for new power plants such as thermal, hydal will not prevail. This will then give us more greenery and de-forestation. That is what we all want – more forest land, more vegetative growth, more animals and cleaner and good eco system.
This increased forestland will help us get good and timely rainfall and predicted seasons.
Ok, now that greenery has increased, the weather is cool, predicted weather conditions are back, we will start seeing water in our open wells in all seasons, our children need not go out to swimming pools to enjoy the wonderful splash. It is all with in the colony. We will, no more need the deep bore wells, which have been contaminated by dissolved solids. a low power consumption a Yes now that the water is available in open wells and at a shallow depth, we need not invest in high power multistage pumping systems. Which in turn will call for reduced power and the cycle goes on. we no more need high power, we can comfortably, efficiently and cost effectively use energy sources.
a more greenery now with reduced power demand, we need not adopt de-forestation or burn fuels, which means, increased greenery. So now we have a clean environment a which means free from gas, smoke filled environment, no more cough, asthma and a host of related diseases which means healthy living a if our health is good naturally we tend to have a happy family a no more water problems, once the water problems are thrashed out, there is no room for unrest in the society. a happy society a no conflicts a when one has no difference of opinion, he certainly has the time to do good and constructive work a awareness to conserve environment a It is now a group effort to conserve the environment and do clean job collectively a more greenery a more agri-greenery more happiness.
So let us join hands to live a happy society, conserve water, conserve energy, so that we leave behind a clean and green environment for our own children. Let us be selfish to the core in conservation of these two “WATER & ENERGY” resources.
