"Telvevison and Violent Crime"

Book Summary by: pattyj

Original Author: Brandon S. Centerwall
Summary for “Violence and American Society”
Our society is riddled with children and young
adults committing heinous crimes such as rape and murder. In New York, a nine year stabbed and killed her best friend over a play ground disagreement. Two boys walked in a school and spent several minutes on a shooting rampage and then turned the gun on themselves. As a whole, society is trying to find an answer as to why this phenomenon occurs.

In "Violence and American Society,” Brandon S. Centerwell states society has become more violent due to the over exposure of preadolescent viewing violence on television which heightens their aggression.
Centerwall maintains that children are born with the instinctive adeptness to imitate adults but lack the know-how to differentiate what behaviors to imitate. Centerwall asserts as the preadolescent matures and is faced with stressful situations, he or she reverts back to what they have learned in the earlier years without giving any thought.
Centerwall states that the findings from the National Commission’s report “Causes and Prevention of Violence” set precedence for other case studies concerning exposure to television violence with heighten aggression in youth. According to Centerwall, other case studies conducted by Tannis Williams and her associates, Gary Granzberg and his associates, Leonard Eron and L. Rowell Huesmann showed also a direct correlation with prolonged watching of television violence and strong preadolescent aggression. Centerwall asserts that in those studies conducted, other factors such as civil unrest and economic growth had been controlled.
Centerwall certifies that television violence is a social problem and should be monitored by adults. Parents should know what their children are watching by knowing the ratings given to violent programs. Centerwall asserts parents should set channel locks on their televisions to block unwanted shows. Centerwall states by taking certain precautions will not lessen freedom of speech but will guard children in society from exposure to extreme violent television.
