Without a doubt it would be preferable if people were not forced to seek refuge from their home country due to the fear of persecution, however, not all countries enjoy the freedom that we, as Australians, have become accustomed to, thus the need for an appropriate system to separate legitimate refugees from illegal immigrants.
Concerning the issue of refugees and illegal immigrants, it is necessary first of all to inform the people of Australia about the possible risks of allowing illegal immigrants to enter Australia. Similarly, when these illegal immigrants come to our shores it is appropriate for Australia to take appropriate measures to ensure our safety and well being. How can one not be concerned about the risks that these immigrants bring and the laws that they are breaking?
Certainly we want to be able to permit refugees into our country and offer them refuge from the difficulties and hardships they faced, however we must be aware of, and consider, these illegal immigrants, they are breaking the law and we must treat these criminals appropriately. In this respect we must detain these illegal immigrants, many of whom claim to be asylum seekers, in detention centres until we can determine whether they ought to be granted refugee status or whether another means of action should be undertaken.
As for the many recent incidents involving terrorism, it is essential that we maintain the security and freedom that Australia has developed by filtering Australia’s intake of migrants allowing only legitimate refugees to enter. If this means that we must detain legitimate refugees for a short period of time then it must be done, we cannot undermine the risks it can bring to our freedom. Moreover, if we begin to loosen our current security measures it could bring our beloved country into a state of anxiety and fear.
In my conclusion it is absolutely necessary that the Australian Government maintains its current stance on the Refugee and Illegal Immigrant issue. As much as we should be trying to do everything in our power to allow and protect these refugees, it should never come at the cost of our current freedom.
