Case Study of A Family with HeaRing impaired child
Family is a basic unit in the society. It is a primary institution
which satisfies all physical and psychological needs of its members. Family runs smoothly when all the family members are normal. A defective child in the family will interfere with every function of the family.
This is a case study of family with hearing impaired child named G. Raja. His mother did single mistake she did was taking medicine during pregnancy. She gave birth to a healthy male child The whole family was very happy about this event because since 35 years there was no child in that family.
The child was good looking, active, cute and healthy. So nobody could identify the hearing impairment. But Raja’s Grandmother at the age of one year got a doubt about him. She tried to teach Atha, Amma to Raja. But she could not. So they took the child to children specialist he took audiogram and found out that the child has a problem in hearing. So he referred this case to ENT specialist then the Doctors could not guide the parents properly. They have given hearing aids and left them.
This was the very bad event for the entire family. They felt very bad and did not approached anybody. It was a prestige issue for them. They could not accept the truth. The child was following few words through lip reading.
All Family members blamed Rekha for giving birth to a defective child, except her husband. They stopped visiting friends and relative places mainly mother did not want to mingle with community.
They had high aspirations about their first child. They wanted to get admission in high standard school. They can also, but due to defectiveness they were forced to join the child in Telugu medium School. Mother faced a tough time in communicating with child. The child was unable to hear without hearing aids. With them also he could hear only loud sounds. So Raja liked to spend time alone, destroying things and mostly eating. His behviour had great effect on family interactions. Mother was the one who suffered a lot with this child.
The role of the mother was very crucial in developing this child. She took him to special classes for sign language. She also learned that language. He passed 10th class and for two years he did a vocational training in fitting machinery. He also learned Basic Computer Course which was taught by his uncle. Raja was provided with a computer at home. So most of the time he started spending with computer. Then he got admission in Intermediate in sweekar Upakar, Secunderabad. Till 10th class mother used to drop the child and received him in the evening. But now he can drive scooter with special mirror arrangements. He had free bus pass also.
He luckily found good friends company and started practicing cricket. He was selected in a cricket team of Deaf association. He also became a member of Deaf reach organization and selected for many seminars, workshops and press meets. He is now completed graduation and working in Cetral Govt Org.
Now the parents feel proud about their son. But some times they feel disturbed with the child.
After going through the case study of the family with deaf child we can conclude that with collective effort of parents, teachers, peers & family members a defective child can lead a normal life and the family can also function properly. When the parents have positive attitude towards the defective child he will be better adjusted in family and community. He will develop high self esteem and emotional stability. Every child have right for parental love and protection. So a defective child should and must receive good affectionate care on par with normal siblings. Then only defectiveness will not effect the family and personality of the child himself.
