Evolution of the Money
the currency, as today we know it, is the result of a long evolution.
At the beginning
did not have currency. One practised the trade, simple exchange of merchandise for merchandise, without value equivalence.
Surgem, then, in century VII B.C., the first currencies with characteristics of the current ones: they are small metal parts with definite weight and value and with the impression of the official matrix, that is, the mark of who emitted and guarantees them its value.
the first metallic currencies - of gold, silver and it has covered - had arrived with the beginning of the Portuguese settling. The monetary unit of Portugal, the REAL, was used in Brazil during all the colonial period. Thus, everything was counted in réis - plural popular of Real - with currencies manufactured in Portugal and Brazil.
In the Average Age, the people who worked with the gold, called silversmith, had organized the first banks, places where the gold and the silver could be kept by the people.
the bankers had decided to give a receipt in paper of the amount of precious metals kept by them. This paper circulated in the cities and was used as the currencies, receiving the paper-currency name. It represented the money that each person had in the bank. Who had this paper-currency could rescue its gold or silver at any time!
In the two last decades of century XVII aggravated it situation of lack of currency in Brazil, compromising the functioning of the economy and provoking drastic reduction in the incomes of the Crown. Innumerable representations, asking for solution for the problem, had been directed to the king for the general governors and of the captainships, representatives of the chambers and members of the church and the nobility. In 1694, finally, D. Peter II decided to create a mint in the Bahia, for the cunhagem of provincial currency for Brazil.
In the first half of century XVIII, the raised gold production made possible the simultaneous functioning of three mints and the cunhagem of great amount of parts, whose values and beauty testify the opulence that characterized the period of the reign of D. João V 1706-1750.
8 Spanish weights reales, that they were valid between 750 and 800 réis, had received stamp from 960 réis, initially in the captainship of Minas Gerais 1808 and later in the one of Mato Grosso 1818.
In 1809 was created the provincial currency of 960 réis, whose cunhagem had beginning in 1810.
