Jesus' Teachings in the Book of Mark

Book Summary by: Dielle

Original Author: Early Christian scholars
Jesus arrived in Galilee, preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom of God. He gathered disciples and together they preached and
worked miracles among the people of the land. The Gospels contain His teachings.
Jesus taught and behaved differently from the traditional establishment. His reason? You don't put new wine into old bottles because it will ruin them. You put new wine in new bottles.
Jesus taught of the Kingdom of God through parables. First there is the parable of the sower. The seeds that fell on the wayside were devoured by birds. Those that fell on stony ground sprouted but were dried up by the sun. Those that grew among thorns got choked by the thorns. Those that fell on good ground muliplied. Jesus claimed himself the sower of words. He said, some people are decieved by Satan, some people are hard-hearted, some are unable to resist temptations, but the ones who hear the word and receive it will be fruitful. "For he that hath, to him shall be given."
The Pharisees and scribes witnessed the disciples eating without washing their hands, which was against the rules. When they commented, Jesus accused them of being holy on the outside, not the inside. It's not what goes in a man's stomach that is unholy, but what comes out of him. Evil thoughts, theft, covetousness, lasciviousness, pride--those are the evil things.
Jesus asked his disciples who He was. They said, the Son of God. But when Jesus told them he'd be suffering someday, they wanted to deny it. Jesus told them not to deny the cross, and to lose their lives in order to gain Life, and not be ashamed of it.
The Pharisees quizzed Jesus on the law concerning marriage. Jesus taught that people must not divorce. God made people male and female, and a man should cleave unto his wife, so they are no more two, they are one flesh.
The disciples thought children would bother Jesus but he said to bring the children to him, and that if they the disciples could not be like children, they wouldn't receive the kingdom of God.
He taught a rich man that, in order to receive the kingdom, he ought to not only obey the commandments but to sell what he had and give to the poor, to make his treasure in heaven. He said it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. But with God, all things are possible.
The Pharisees asked Jesus, if you are of the kingdom of God, then why do we pay taxes? Jesus saw it was Caesar's picture on the coin and he said, "Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and render unto God the things that are God's."
One of the Scribes came and asked Jesus which is the first commandment of all. He said, 'thou shalt love the Lord, this is the first commandment. And the second is, thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. To love God and your neighbor is greater than any burnt offering at the temple. The widow who gave her last coin there gave more than the rich gave.
In summary, Jesus was teaching people to act according to their highest aspirations and stop merely going throught the motions of living a good life. He taught that faith was the healer of men. Faith looks foolish to those that are hard hearted or given to temptation. But to those with faith, wisdom multiplies. Jesus was not trying to start a church, but to establish teachings of how to make this world the Kingdom of God. It simply depends on being true.
