Mecca is the prime place of pilgrimage in Islam and Medina comes after that. Medina is known for only one place and that
is Masjid-E-Nabwi built by Prophet Mohammed himself who participated in
building of this mosque and prayed for ten years in this mosque. Islam spread all over the world from this mosque. Prophet Mohammed was welcomed in Medina. The gentry of Medina were ready to spend for Him. But Prophet Mohammed politely refused all of them. Where Prophet Mohammad’s Camel mare Qaswa sat on ground in open place, He decided to build a mosque there. This land belonged to two orphans Sahil and Suhail. Yezal-bin-Afras was their guardian. He went to the Prophet and politely urged Him to take that land and build a Mosque on it. Prophet Mohammed politely refused the urge and said, “I will not take away this land of orphans for free. I will pay whatever they ask for and then build a mosque.”After a very long haggling Prophet Mohammed agreed and paid ten golden coins to purchase the land and built Masjid-E-Nabwi. Many labourers and Followers joined Prophet Mohammed in building the mosque. Prophet Mohammed had also participated in building the mosque by mixing mud and lifting bricks with His own hands. At the time of building the mosque Prophet Mohammed prayed for the well being of all participants. Built before 1450 years, Masjid-E-Nabwi was not so grand as it is today. It was a classical example of Islamic simplicity. It had mud bricks and a roof of date tree leaves. There were seven pillars supporting the roof made from date tree. Floor of the mosque was made of earth. In monsoon water leaked from the roof and floor used to be slippery due to mud. One of the followers spread sand all over the floor to solve this problem. Prophet Mohammed liked this trick and from then onwards the practice of spreading sand on mosque floor began. One of the sections of the mosque was named Suffa, where Prophet Mohammed sat with His Followers and discussed religious matters. This mosque was built in Hijri Year 622. At that time its area was 850 square
meters and height was2.9 meters. During the Life of Prophet Mohammed, it was rebuilt after 7 years. At that rebuilding its area increased and became 2025 square meters and height became 4.06 meters. Second time too, Prophet Mohammed participated in renovation of the mosque. At present it is difficult to identify the original building built in the times of Prophet Mohammed because the mosque has been continuously changing its shape and size due to increasing number of pilgrims
every year. Past rulers also made it grander and greater on every time of renovation. That is why this mosque looks like Jannat . Prophet Mohammed was buried in Bayat-El-Nabi room of this mosque with Hazrat Abu Baker Siddiqui and Hazrat Omar Ibn Al Khattab. All Hajis are always eager to visit this room. Dome of this Bayat-El-Nabi room did not exist till Hijri 678 <1282 AD>. Dome was built in the times of Sultan Qalabun Al Saliri. This dome was also renovated two-three times by different rulers. In Hijri Year 1253 <1837 AD> it was painted green. Thereafter it became well known as ‘The Green Dome’.
