In recent years, feminist researches have highlighted the issues affecting girls and women in many spheres. But when it comes to girls and women with disabilities we notice that within the women's movement at large they remain highly invisible. They face a situation of double discrimination because of barriers due to disability as well as barriers due to being a girl or women. India is a vast country with a population of more than one billion and 2.19 crore are people with disabilities (Census, 2001). Among the total disabled population 93.01 lakh are women with disabilities (Census, 2001). In Indian society, where the practice of gender equality has become a convention one can imagine the situation of girls with disabilities. They are considered to be the most isolated, marginalized and hidden group of people. Due to this biased cultural set-up and limited resources at the national, community and household level, it is considered a bad investment to spend on educating a disabled girl child, adolescent or woman and to rehabilitate them so that they can be integrated into the community as productive and equal members. so it becomes necessary to find a space for them. this can be done by one important option: empowerment of girls with disabilities through education.empowerment meansthe giving to individuals of power to take decisions in matters relating to themselves, esp.
(in an organization) in relation to self-development.it means equal status of women. empowering women socio-economically through increased awareness of their rights and duties as well as access to resources is a decisive step towards greater security for them. Empowerment includes higher literacylevel and education for women, better health care for women and children, equal ownership of productive resources, increased participation in economic and commercial sectors, awareness of their rights and responsibilities, improved standards of living and acquiring self-reliance, self-esteem and self-confidence. education is a process of training and developing the knowledge, skill, mind, character etc. especially by formal schooling, teaching and training. in empowering girls with disabilities education plays a vital role.it makes them proficient in vocational skills and information seeking skills, and also helps them in taking decisions, ultimately making them self-reliant, self-confident as much as possible.so to empower girls with disabilities education acts as a key factor and one can't ignore the role of education.
