A Degree - A Career

Book Summary by: Brigith

This abstract was translated from Um curso, uma profissão
Hundreds of university degrees, dozens of universities, but only one option! It is in the most important moments of your
life such as these that we are confronted with the great phenomenon of indecision, this if one is aware of the kind of society one lives in. There are several factors that make us wonder whether or not we are safe of our very own choices! A university degree, a university BA diploma, imposes a determined period-sort-of-contract, both with our time (should I say “times”) and our dedication. To choose a possible future activity because we assume it may be the most convenient is not, by all means, the best choice. To each school year that comes, new degrees are aggregated to the already infinite existing roll and every student suffers the impact of more than one professional way-out, all of them however agglomerated and fulfilled. To select a chance of employment is at this stage not to think only whether you are productive or what you like, enjoy, are skilled to do, let alone whether it is appropriate for you, but quite the reverse, what is demanded of you is to observe the labour market and to put the unemployment rate within a few years forward into perspective, along with a fiercer competition, without even having the chance of belonging to the elected “employed”. In spite of this, we do need to actually strengthen our training, for the richer our curriculum becomes, more chances you get to better positions or, quite as simple as that, better possibilities when running for a job and a career. The last but not the least… a good doses of ambition surrounded by well established ethical values is half-way one for a more promising path in the future, when combined to a well-based training and a sound-structured education. After all, choosing a career is nothing but one’s next step forward, which, as difficult as any others and as conditioned by so many factors it may be, is one of the most challenging, captivating and pleasurable choices all of us may and indeed must take.
