A
woman went into the Department of Motor Vehicles to renew her drivers' license. The
clerk asked her for her profession ,and the woman hesitated as to the answer. The clerk said:" I'm asking whether you hold a job" The woman answered:" Of course I do ! I'm a Mother!" "Being a mother isn't a job!" -said the clerk, dryly "so I will put down "housewife" in your license" I've forgotten all about this story until I've found myself in a similar situation The clerk I've encountered was a career woman, cool as a cucumber, an efficient person with a degree. She asked me -"what do you do for your living?" I'm not sure what caused me to reply as I did ,but ... "I'm a Child Development and Human Relations Specialist ,I've answered. The clerk paused her typing for a second and looked up to me ,sure she's misheard me. I've repeated my
answer ,quietly and calmly ,emphasising the nouns. I've looked at her, in awe ,while she'd written down the details on the official form ,black ink on white page. Then she said .. "Might I inquire.. What is it that you do ,exactly?" Quietly,I've started to answer: "I develop long-term plans (every Mom does that),both in my research lab and in experimental facilities (I'd normally
say -at home and outside the home) . I lead a team (my family) and I've already accepted 4 major projects(my daughters). I'm fully committed to my job (what woman won’t agree with this saying ?)- and the job requires 14 working hours a day (said that so as not to say 24 hours a day ) The increasingly impressed clerk finished filling out the form ,and personally opened the exit door for me. When I got back home ,my team met me at the door- the 13
year old ,the 7 year old ,and the 3 year old. From upstairs ,I could hear the voice of my latest experiment (the 6 months old baby ) ,trying out a new tone of voice . I felt like such a winner! Motherhood –what a wonderful career! Every
grandmother should be called Senior Specialist in Child Development and Human Relations . A Great Grandmother is Senior Executive. Any Aunt is ,effectively Counselor-Specialist. Those are my thoughts about this . This story is dedicated, with enormous love and admiration to all the women, mothers, aunts, friends and grandmothers. All of them are ,to me, Specialist in Making the Life So Much Better for everyone else!
