THE LEAN ALBANIAN WOMAN in the blue-bordered sari with the strength of her love and endurance transformed, the city of Joy’
into the ‘City of love.’ Her tireless work, steely determination soon highlighted her eminent personality to the world. She was the
mother of the poorest of the poor and there was always room for all destitutes, poor and sick in her heart. She believed that true service to God one could attain salvation, the freedom from all worldly ties. The missionary of charity, which is today a world-renowned home for the sick, poor and aged, was almost nothing at first. Nourished and nurtured by the Great Mother’s love it grew into what it is today-An Institution. The city of Calcutta was never totally complete without her love and heart warming care. She started her life as a social worker from the young age of nineteen. Her days were spent in the filthy slums of Calcutta. She dreamt the dreams, which no one thought, could ever become a reality. But the mother with a golden heart strived to make the world a better place to live in. At night she stitched the worn and torn clothes, nurtured the sick, the ill and found contentment in them. Her personality was found in billions. Otherwise could one dedicate one’s life to the poorest of the poor? But she turned dreams into reality.
Little by little deeds made the world aware of her heart-warming presence. Soon awards and medals brought her the honor and respect of millions. She served not only the people of India but also the world. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1979. She died in 1997.May her soul rest in peace.
