‘Yasho buddhir bhalam dhairyam nirbhayatham arogata ajatyam vakpadutvam cha Hanumatsmaranath drudam bhaveth’. Translated in English, it means that, with constant remembrance of Lord Hanuman, you ensure that renown, keen intellect, strength, bravery, fearlessness, freedom from sickness become your distinguishing attributes permanently; also you cease to be dumb and your speech is sublime. I have all along been a voracious reader and, in the considered opinion of a host of people, I am a wordsmith never at a loss for expressions to make clear to the reader or listener what I have in mind to convey. All the same, I am not ashamed to confess that I am not sure whether I use the right word every time. That I have continued, nevertheless, to make others understand me aright all the time seems to depend upon their instinctive ability to catch my meaning rather than the correct usage of words on my part. Boldness, bravery, courage, intrepidity and fearlessness may on the surface seem one and the same to all intents and purposes, but I hope you will agree that there are differences in nuance between one and another. I shall now elaborate on what bothers me in regard to phraseology in relation to a specific incident. In those years when I was a resident in a different suburb of Mumbai, it was my general habit on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays to meet a few friends for evening gossip at a Goldsmith’s shop. The owner of the shop was one of the friends and provided us with chairs at the front of the shop. On one occasion we saw a number of people giving chase to a man shouting ‘Thief, thief catch him’. Nobody
responded to the call petrified when the felon brandished a knife and threatened to stab anyone who tried to stop him. There was a sudden change in the situation when a lean ad bare-bodied person appeared from nowhere on the other side of the road and cried a stern halt. I do not know why and how it happened. The thief dropped his weapon and meekly surrendered to the frail man who was unarmed. In a sense, we had the courage to be cowards enough for the sake of dear and near ones back home. Once the thief gave in, there were a few people ready enough to give him a lashing both with their tongues and hands. I am even now unable to decide how to describe the spirited act of that stranger.
