A University Course in English Grammar

Book Summary   by:Eithlin     Original Authors: Angela Downing; Philip Locke
ª

An intensive course in grammar and linguistics ideal for those who desire to acquire a deep knowledge of the functioning of the English grammar rules. This book provides explanations and examples on the workings of the English language enhancing its lessons with some tasks that help the student to better understand each chapter contents. Moreover, it comes with Key of Selected Answers which can be checked to ensure the correctness of certain questions. The book is divided in thirteen different chapters, each one treating one part of the English Grammar; we can find chapters such as: The skeleton of the message or Organising the message. At the same time, each chapter is divided by diverse Modules, depending on the chapter. Modules begin with a small summary of the subject that will be treated in the Module and latter they give a profound explanation of the subject accompanied by real world examples that are supposed to help the understanding. Finally, at the end of each chapter there are a series of tasks which can be questions concerning the theory or practical exercises related with the chapter. Although it has some practical examples, the book is mainly concerned with theoretical explanations that require previous knowledge of linguistic concepts otherwise many parts of the book cannot be understood. This book is ideal for linguist, teachers and translators as it offers an extensive study of English but its technical, and sometimes confusing, explanations of certain subject made it difficult to the average reader who will find it hard and of little use. As a matter of fact its way of describing certain things, is one of the book's major disadvantages as some descriptions are confusing and paradoxical in the best of the cases.
