The film that was chosen to be analyzed was “Mystic River”, which is a very emotionally gripping film by Clint Eastwood.
The assignment says that there should be four characters analyzed in this paper, but Mystic River will provide with three, given the structure of the movie revolving around the following three people.
Sean Penn
plays the character of Jimmy Markham, who is medium height with dark hair and blue eyes. Kevin Bacon plays the role of Sean who is tall with brown hair and green eyes, while Tim Robbins plays the role of Dave who is very tall, but slouched, with graying hair and blue eyes. All of the characters are around the same age (their mid-thirties) and are in reasonably
good shape.
All of these characters are in the same social class, but Jimmy is the one who has the most going for him. Sean is a cop who makes a good salary as a policeman, but he does have to go through the drama of that job on an everyday basis. His personal life is not horrible, but his wife did leave him about six months before the movie starts and gave birth to their daughter in his absence. Dave is in the same middle class level, but no hints of his occupation are given. He has no given place in the community, but is happily married and has a son.
The reason that Jimmy was initially neglected is that he differs from Dave and Sean quite a bit. He owns his own store and lives in the same neighborhood, but is seen in the community as the enforcer, but also the owner of this small neighborhood in Boston. He hangs out with a band of 3 brothers (thugs) that do his dirty work in order to provide better lives for those Jimmy cares for the most. The causes are noble, the actions are not.
