Access to Essential Drugs
Canada is since April 2005 a potential exporter of drugs for communicable
diseases in countries encountering humanitarian issues, under the direction of Jean Chrétien. But, there is still a problem to know if these drugs will reach populations who are financially disabled and vulnerable. A pharmaceutical company, Apotex is the one which is known to want to manufacture generic drugs. One of the drugs which is being tested is the 3FDC pill per day used in immune deficient patients for a disease named HIV/AIDS. Communicable disease are not well treated in least developed countries, that is why an effort has to be done to help the populations to have access for the only medication that can assist them to recover. The patent drug 3FDC has to follow the guidelines of the World Trade Organisation. The DOHA declaration asks the members states of the United Nations to make sure the drugs are useful for the population that suffer from disease that are difficult to treat. The are many advocates for generic drugs to help patients who are at risk, who are from the public, private and international organisations, one of the important personalities to help in the campaign to treat HIV/AIDS illeness is Stephen Lewis a United Nations Special Envoy of the Secretary General of the United Nations Organization. Drugs are subject to an application request in order to release them on the market, and they have to respond to certain criteria. The first drug to treat the HIV/AIDS illeness is from Canada. The promotion of this drug should help to treat many patients. Thanks to the DOHA declaration ratified by the members of the World Trade Organization, the poorer countries will be able to have access to drugs which help to treat debilitating diseases which are infectious and costly.
