“WHEN THE HEAVENS OPENED, THE HANDS WENT UP IN PRAYERS”
When the world went topsy-turvy celebrating the most awaited feast at the
year’s end, the Christmas; there was silence and grief covering some of its part. It brought back old
memories that witnessed the shattering pictures of the devastating Tsunami. So, 25th December stood out to be the Eve of the Tsunami day in the hearts of millions who bore a link with it in some way or the other.
A year passed by amidst with all its colours ,celebrations and stories rising high, forgetting to even peep in those
lives who are still surviving in painful numbness in the coastal villages of Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, Nicobar Islands, Thailand(Phuket), Indonesia. It was for them a year of
struggle- a struggle against poverty, disease and floods as well as against themselves for not dwelling on Tsunami anymore but live a
life for the ‘Now’.
The after effect scenario shows how the villagers have reduced to become poorer both emotionally and economically as no fruitful measures are taken up to make their lives a little better than the Hell. Rather, along with their Black memories their lives are blackened with water-borne illness.
In Thailand and Indonesia, faith (religion) - based charity are the first to reach out their helping hands. Along with their sincere charitable work they serve to explain the unprecedented and extraordinary event of God. To this catastrophe which killed millions of people they have only one explanation to offer: “It was a sign that these are the last days. You must prepare yourself to
meet Jesus Christ. Repent on your sins.”
But for Buerk and Anna Moore, Tsunami helped them to strengthen their relationship from living- together to a marriage. They too are victims, who survived in the chaos that occurred on 26th December, 2004. And it is only after the incident they realized that they
Live only for each other which finally led them to get married immediately after it. Hence for them, Tsunami is not that they should dwell upon; but it will stay in their lives forever in their sad and happy memories.
Therefore life trades off leaving behind all its pleasurable and painful events and if we have to stay, we too, need to look in front and get prepared to meet more challenges in the coming future. And with Tsunami specter hanging around like shroud in their lives, these survivors spread the compelling message of Existence in their mellowing voice – To accept Life with all its shades as His Divine Grace.
