The lecture on Florence Nighttingale in 1973 was well attended and people came
to it with a view to seeing the
writing
done by the great lady of history
Florence Nightingale. Fortunately the expert was in the seat of learning and
all the questions were addressed to the man in the hot seat. Whatever
it was about that point in time that caused so many people to gather
at 7 pm in the evening has never been repeated. So much so that
several years ago I was in America and found to my surprise the
interest in those days of women together had continued.
They gave us the name of Housewives Register and we were a meeting point
for the lively minded woman and each woman would in turn share the
home with
visiting lecturers and their selective audiences and offer
refreshments to that audience. What we got out of it was a source
of inspiration to many people .. and later on .. we all enjoyed swapping
stories and kept up the friendly relations necessary all those years ago.
