In this
article, Linda L. Richards profiles author JK Rowling. Author of the famous ‘Harry Potter’ series, JK Rowling delights
youth and adults alike with her fantastic tales. She asks her fans to affectionately call her ‘Jo.’ The ‘K’ in her name stands for Kathleen, after her favorite grandparent who died when JK Rowling was a young girl. Her idea for ‘Harry Potter’ entered her head while she was on a crowded train to London. JK Rowling had been
writing since the age of six, but had never gotten excited about it before. Unfortunately, on the train, she didn’t have a pen with her to put her thoughts onto paper. She was too shy to ask anyone for a pen, so as the train was delayed, she sat there and thought and thought about a bespectacled boy who did not know he was a wizard. That evening, she began to write. Her
manuscript was put on hold when her mother passed away. However, she pulled it back out and worked on it some more in Portugal where she had obtained employment teaching English. In Portugal, JK Rowling met and married a man and they had a daughter, Jessica. When the marriage did not work out, she and Jessica traveled back to England. While Jessica napped, JK continued to write, finally finishing her first novel. The first agent she sent her proposal to turned it down. The second one accepted it, but it took a year before he found a publisher for the manuscript. The first ‘Harry Potter’ book was published and JK Rowling was on her way to fame.
