Writing Poetry

Book Summary by: Robor

Original Author: Jean Bailey Robor
Usually when we think of poetry, we think of lines that rhyme. However, the definition of poetry cannot be confined to only
that. It is a piece of imaginative writing laid out in lines. A verse of poetry may have a strong metrical element or have its own form. It is a form of literature unique to its author. A good poetry is not created by following a recipe, but rather by reading and studying other poetry, and then writing your own, following your own thoughts and impressions. Many poets begin writing for pleasure. Some find it therapeutic, much like writing in a journal. For some, they were given an assignment to write a poem and found pleasure in it. A poem is versatile and wide-ranging. In order to be successful at writing poetry, it’s a good idea to have your work critiqued by those who appreciate poetry. Join a local poetry or writing group if possible. Be realistic. Even good poetry may earn you little or nothing. Writing poetry and enjoying the writing needs to be enough satisfaction. Reading about other poets and the struggles they faced may help you in understanding their poetry and in writing your own. Your poem will start as a tune in your head. Poetry is found in many forms. Among these are ballads, nursery rhymes, songs, popular verse, and free verse. Find the right form for you, then apply your thoughts, ideals, and notions to paper. You may be surprised what you eventually come up with. Once you’ve thoroughly critiqued your poem, and brought it before a critique group, you may want to submit it for publication. Be sure to research poetry magazines and find out where your work might fit. Always read submission guidelines and adhere to them before submitting. Happy writing!
