Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaja Vastu Sangrahalaya is one of the most famous museums of India. Well maintained and housing any and every kind of historical classic artifacts, a visit to the
place is a treat for all
art and history lovers. Situated in the heart of South Mumbai it is a major attraction for all visitors and residents of the city.
The architect George Wittet designed it in 1909. Sir Ratan Tata, DJ. Tata and other Trustees as its patron it was opened for the public in 1922. The
museum is a collection of sculpture, Miniature
painting, Maritime heritage, Natural history,
Decorative art, Nepal-Tibet, Indus Valley Civilization,
Arms & Armour, Far Eastern painting, Oil painting, Premchand Roychand Gallery and the Ratan Tata Art Gallery.
The rarest and the oldest art and sculpture of the 11th century till the times of Tata’s can be seen and enjoyed. One gets so engrossed watching the coins, birds, and arms, to Buddhist life, ivories, and porcelain decorative that it becomes difficult to move out of the museum. Religion, romance, warfare, animals, art, culture, paintings all find a place in the museum. It is a place for research for Indians and foreigners. Students and families are regular visitors to this historical place.
Another attraction of the museum is Film Festivals that are held from
time to time. The Children’s Film Festival is presently going on in the museum to mark Children’s Day. I enjoyed watching ‘Aakad Bakkad Bambe Bo’ for about 30 minutes.
It is a great learning experience for the masses but a special memory for people who admire and appreciate art. I am not a very famous writer bit ever since my visit to the museum as a Media student I could not stop myself in penning down my views for it.
