Culture means customs; religions, music, dance, etc. make culture. Our science and our languages, our handicrafts and our buildings, our foods and festivals and our ways of thinking all make up our culture.
Andhra Pradesh forms the major link between the north and the south of our country. It lies to the north of Tamil Nadu and the east of Karnataka. Hyderabad is the capital of Andhra Pradesh. The Krishna and the Godavari are the major river system in the state.
People wear different types of clothes in different parts of the country. People living in towns and cities of India wear modern garments and people living in villages wear traditional clothes. Men wear dhoti, shirts, trousers, kurta-pyjama, etc. in the south, men wear lungi. The people in Kashmir wear Sawar kameez and phirans. In Rajasthan, men wear pagri.
Women also wear different types of dresses. They wear Sarees, skirts, trousers, shirts and salwars. In many place like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat the people wear Ghaghra and choli.
The sari is worn in different ways in different states. The Gujarat, Bengali and Maharastra styles of tying the sari are different from each other.
Bidari work on brass and copper is very beautiful. Hyderabadi is known for its bangles and jewelry of pearls and semi-precious stones. Cotton Sarees and kalankari art on cloth is also well known. The colors used in the kalankari art are made from the bark and leaves of trees.
There are about 165 languages in India. Only 18 languages have been recognized as major languages of our country. They are Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengal, Gujatati, Marathi, Oriya, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Kashmiri, Assamese, Urdu, Konkani and Manipuri. Hindi is s the official language of our country. This language is most widely spoken all over India. English has also been retained as a language for office communication.
