Greta Garbo, Ernest Hemingway, Agatha Christie - Istanbul

Website Summary   by:SM THOMPSON
ª

Istanbul European City of Culture 2010 where east meets west .. 1892 .. a key date according to the Turkish Digest and where Greta Garbo, Ernest Hemingway and Agatha Christie share experiences in dimly lit hotels opened up to meet the Orient Express.

There were several programmes on BBC Radio 3 on Sunday evening and architecture was featured from the 16th century to the present day in Istanbul with reference to the Ottoman Empire and its magnificent legacy of the Muslim Mosques . the Blue Mosque is one of Istanbul's most prominent and memorable Mosques and I recall visiting it about 10 years ago on my day off with my student Mustafa!

Words and Music put together a series of poems and melodies which discussed the Muslim dominated part of the world and contrasted it with our world known as The West ... strong definitions, they do this and we do that . do what one wonders .... which refers to the differences culturally between the Ottoman Empire and the rest of Europe .. thanks Turkish Digest ... hard work!
