Michael Jackson has now been nominated in the Best Male Pop Performance category for This Is It from the movie. The song was released in 2009 but was still eligible for the 2011 Grammys due to the recording Academy’s unusually-long window of eligibility.
This award could come up for Michael many times in the future as more recordings from the vault surface.
No stranger to receiving this reward, Jackson made Grammy history in 1984 when he took home eight awards, including Album of the Year for Thriller, Record of the Year for “Beat It” and Best R&B Song for “Billie Jean.” That one-year record has never been broken.
Jackson’s career tally of 13 Grammys includes just one in the last 20 years – in 1996, when “Scream,” his duet with sister Janet, took home Best Music Video.
Jackson will be a sentimental favorite but this category is a widely-varied group that includes Bruno Mars, Adam Lambert, John Mayer and Michael Buble.
Jackson’s latest posthumous effort, simply titled Michael, will hit stores on December 14. The songs from that album won’t be eligible for Grammy consideration until 2012.
The 2011 Grammy Awards will air on CBS on February 13.
