Andy Dufresne, a young banker, is wrongfully convicted for the killing of his wife and her lover, and sentenced to Shawshank, the State Prison of Maine, during the 1940s to the 1960s.Hi story is as narrated by Red - Shawshank’s walking version of Sears and Roebucks who becomes his friend. Andy is subjected to the brutalities of the guards and other inmates like the three sisters who either abused him sexually or sent him to the infirmary, beaten almost to death when they could not subdue him.Showing a tenacity hitherto unseen in that prison, Andy fights back andstruggles to maintain his sanity and a semblance of human dignity by using his banking expertise to help prison guards in financial matters. The warden helps him improve the prison library in exchange for help in laundering money from his shady deals, using the prison inmates as workforce in construction projects.Tommy, a new inmate who happens to know the real murderer of Andy’s wife promises to testify to his innocence, but the warden – fearful that Andy would later squeal about his lucrative but illegal deals – gets Tommy killed.Andy manages to escape to freedom by crawling through a sewer. He withdraws all the money he had saved in a secret account, along with the money laundered by the warden, and leaves for a small village near the Pacific Ocean, where Red, now out on parole, rejoins him.
