Waiting for Sunrise Set in Vienna ....

Book Summary   by:SM THOMPSON     Original Author: William Boyd
ª

I was in Vienna sometime ago staying with Family so I was delighted to read the article in The Guardian On Saturday on : Viennese Waltz and the extraordinary city of Vienna is well documented: William Boyd returns to the city and the ......................
era that inspired his latest novel: The author comments that it took him half an hour to walk from the centre of Vienna from the opera house to the Freud Museum on Berggasse, up Augustinerstrasse, along Herrengasse, past .. stables of Spanish Riding school . across Michelerplatz and along the street past the Cafe Central and across an avenue of the Ring by the university - sounds like a very energetic walk referring back to our
walks in Vienna to the Opera and the Great Museums of Vienna, but the author contributes to focus on a slope of Berggasse to No 19 : apartment building where Freud lived from 1891 to 1938 now a small museum. (We that is family and I - ) privately had coffee in the Cafes where Freud is reputed to have hung out! But the author is eloquent and
enthusiastic about Vienna and continues ... Vienna is beauatifully preserved and maintained .... turn a corner ... imagining that Mozart or Brahms could have seen the identical view! Vienna with its fading pomp in the lst years of the Austro Hungarian empire- 1867-1918 is present .... in .. almost every street scene or vista, and the author
still on the subject of Freud writes that Freud's Vienna, Wittgenstein's Vienna, Egon Schiele's Vienna interest him a lot! He confesses to a Vienna Obsession started by Egon Schiele : when Rudolf Leopold's catalogue raisonne of Schiele's paintings and drawings sppeared: Schiele a virtual unknown: outpouring of postcards/posters : everyone loved Schiele:

In 1913 Stalin was in Vienna to write a communist pamphet: Trotsky was there at the same time. and the author refers to Adolf's Hitler's Vienna - 1908-13 in passing .... Hilter wore a rubber jacket - which made him sweat and smell! ............. great novel of those days in the past was Vienna's Ulysses:: and Roth and Musil in their novels refer to a vanished world. But the author objects ..... the world of Old Vienna has not entirely vanished .. its possible to go to Cafe Landtmann where Freud enjoyed a kapuziner and a cigar! its possible to enjoy the Cafe Sperl his favourite imagine Egon Schiele wandering in with one of his models and eat Saachertorte in Hotel Sacher watch patisserie chefs at work Vienna has managed to hold onto its glorious past in a way that
other European Capitals have not managed to do so .. Jean Paul Sartre would still recognise Cafe Flore - Alberto Mravia Caffe Greco and Charles Dickens would feel /at home/ in the Grapes by Limehouse Basin .... turn the page and there is a black and white pic of Gustav Mahler, Max Reinhard, Carl Moll and Alfred Roller, Vienna ca 19O3 ... seems to add to the texture of the article on the Austrian Capital which is delightful readng on a cold February afternoon here in the South of England with snow falls at London Heathrow Airport: Thanks Guardian Saturday: Excellent views of Vienna and a nostalgic look back to where I might have lived had things managed to work out ................. can we work it out .... . hard work pays UP! -
